General Questions

Can you introduce yourself and your job?

Yeah, I'm Phoebe and I work at the national aquarium or in the shop.

When was the Aquarium built?

It was in 1998.

How many tourists visit every year?

Every year I'm not sure, but every day we get around 300 to 1000 visitors a day.

Does your company implement specific actions to limit the impact of your job on the environment?

Yes, so obviously we’re an aquarium, we look after all sea life, things like that, the animals. We also look after sea grass, which has a massive impact on the environment, so it’s kind of not really growing at the moment, so we’re trying encourage people to donate so that we get more sea grass, which gives us more oxygen, so yes we do a lot for the environment.

Do you think your city uses energy-saving bulbs?

Yes, I do in my house and I think lot of people I know have the same at homes. I'm not sure about different businesses but we use them in our houses, yes.

Do you use chemical products on your plantations?

I'm not sure, I don't know…

Are there green means of transport?

Yes, yes we do. We encourage people to take buses together, and do car shares, so obviously they will take lifts together, which reduces the amount of cars on the road. We at the aquarium also offer discount if you’ve taken public transports, so you do take benefits from that, which encourages people to take public transports.

Are there measures to save water?

Yes, I believe so. I don't know about Plymouth in general but we certainly do in the Aquarium.

Do you encourage the population to recycle?

Yes, you can recycle everywhere. There are different bins for food waste, card boards, plastics, paper, glass bins everywhere, in the supermarkets, so yes.

Are there any measures to reduce the heating in public buildings?

Yes, I think so, we do live on the coast which is quite windy and quite cold, especially where we work. The wind is very cold so we do reduce the heating but in other places I'm not sure...

Do you offer grants or funds of any kinds to encourage citizens to insulate better their private homes?

We chose the types of trees in order to reproduce different types of climates, for example a tropical climate and a mediterranean climate.

Do you have any specific fundings ?

I don't know, I'm not sure, sorry!

What are the reasons of your actions?

Me personally? I reduce a lot of plastic, as there is a lot of plastic in the junction at the moment, so I'm doing what I can to reduce that as much as possible. And obviously I work for a charity, so I work for the environment as well.
